At our Baptism we are encouraged to shine as "lights in the world, to the glory
of God the Father" and Sunday by Sunday there is the reminder in the service of
Holy Communion that "we are the body of Christ". It is our life's work to seek,
by God's grace, to understand and experience more deeply what shining with
Christ's light means within our particular life and context and how as Christ's
church we may witness to the truth that we are truly his body on earth. Cursillo offers a very particular
way of exploring these issues which has proved to be
enormously helpful to Christians throughout the world in a whole variety of
social and cultural contexts. Cursillo is gifted to a Diocese and as a movement
will only operate with the support of the Diocesan Bishop. The first Anglican
Cursillo in the Diocese of York was gifted from Bradford Diocese and took place
earlier this year. Great care has been taken establishing a
competent and committed leadership team under the oversight of Jonathan Brown as
Lay Director and the Reverend Bruce Harrison as Spiritual Director. As
Archbishop I am happy to commend this work as it seeks to challenge and deepen
the faith of those who attend the Cursillo weekends. Cursillo also encourages
people to put into practice the teaching and challenges received there through what is called the "Fourth Day" which provides the means of ongoing support
and encouragement for living as Christ's body in the world.
Like any initiative that seeks to deepen faith and encourage discipleship it
will not be for everyone. But for many it has proved to be life-transforming and
deeply enriching and I pray that it will bring fresh life and vision to those of
the Diocese of York who engage with the Cursillo process..
